The demand for an eighth printing demonstrates that A Century of South African Short Stories has endeared itself not only to academics and scholars, but the public as well. Since its first publication in 1978 this short story anthology has become the best-selling book of its genre in South Africa and after nine years it has not lost its vitality. Many of the writers included have become internationally famous. This collection includes work by Peter Abrahams, Herman Charles Bosman, Jack Cope, Nadine Gordimer, Bessie Head, Doris Lessing, Alan Paton, Olive Schreiner, Pauline Smith and Can Themba. Also included is an excellent introduction by the late Jean Marquard who puts the literary form of short story writing in South Africa into perspective.
